London Bombing Foiled

Congratulations and thanks to all those - be they civilian, police or intelligence services - who were involved in finding and making safe the Haymarket bomb. Had it exploded it would have been an appalling atrocity. The thought makes me shudder all the more because I know Haymarket well from when I lived in London.

Every time the terrorists succeed in murder the authoritarians say it strengthens the argument in favour of repressive measures such as ID Cards.

Every time a terrorist attack is foiled without the use of repressive measures such as ID Cards it strengthens the argument against them.

Did you see the documentary on Monday night about how easy it is to get new legal identities in th UK? If the documentary is to be believed, you can change your name by deed poll, get a new drviing license to match and then use that to get a bank account, apply for jobs etc. Any police searches, e.g. to check for previous criminal records, entry on the sex offenders' register, etc, don't make the link with any entries under your previous name.

This could form the basis for the first coherent argument I've seen for a central ID register. Of course, there would still be issues such as when you would have to show ID, what records could be kept, who could see them, etc., none of which the current government proposals address in any way approaching adequacy.

Didn't see the documentary, however I'd question if the point you raise would require a central ID register. All that would be required would be a better integrated identity *change* database linked to police searches. So the vast majority of us who never change our name by deed poll would be unaffected.

I'm so thankful that there have been no injuries so far, I think the terrorists will always find a way round any measures the government implements though.

We'll just be left with an iron fist of surveillance that we're unlikely to be able to get rid of.

It would be great to hear a politician acknowledge we don't need any more surveillance of us. If only!!
