This could form the basis for the first coherent argument I've seen for a central ID register. Of course, there would still be issues such as when you would have to show ID, what records could be kept, who could see them, etc., none of which the current government proposals address in any way approaching adequacy.

All that would be required would be a better integrated identity *change* database linked to police searches. So the vast majority of us who never change our name by deed poll would be unaffected.

We'll just be left with an iron fist of surveillance that we're unlikely to be able to get rid of.

It would be great to hear a politician acknowledge we don't need any more surveillance of us. If only!!
