UK Snap Election Ruled Out

Gordon Brown has ruled out a snap election this autumn and is unlikely to call one next spring either. He's denied that this is because the latest opinion polls show the Tories 6% above Labour - but nobody's going to believe him.

So the Brown bounce has run out of steam, to mix a metaphor. He is now facing the prospect of not getting a majority in the next election whenever it happens. How can he change minds and win the votes of people like me?

Simple: drop plans for ID Cards and a huge, intrusive National Identity Register (NIR).

It's clear that ID Cards have no positive political value. Few people will switch to Labour because they like the idea, many of us will switch from Labour because we find the scheme totally unacceptable.

If you feel the same way and have a Labour MP, this might be a good time to write and remind him or her that there's now time for them to change Brown's mind, get Blair's dangerous ID Card scheme dropped and win back your vote.

Actually, a poll carried out recently in this flat showed that the identity card is just one of a number of issues that persuade the electorate not to vote Labour: the party's ethos is intrusive, authoritarian and anti-democratic. For a party to get my vote, in a positive way, they would need to talk seriously about civil liberties, so that they would talk about repealing pieces of legislation like RIPA; restoring parliamentary oversight of legislation; resolving the West Lothian Question (just because the Tories raise it mischievously (because the electoral system gives them a majority in England) doesn't mean that it should be ignored)... The identity card is a symptom of what's wrong rather than an isolated mistake.
And I haven't even started on their economic, criminal justice and foreign policies.

Absolutely. Unfortunately it's difficult to campaign on an abstract such as "authoritarianism". More effective (hopefully) to highlight a particular threat and solution.

"The Labour party ethos" is an issue. "ID Cards" are a threat. "Scrap ID Cards" is an outcome. "Get Labour out / Change Brown's mind" are alternative waypoints. "Don't vote Labour / Write to your MP" are action opportunities.

This post was intended as a call to action.

While I agree that focusing on single issues can bring results, even a victory on the ID issue (and I don't think that that's the worst of the government's acts) would leave too many repressive and badly thought-out legislation in place. If you had told me ten years ago that I would be likelier to vote Tory than Labour I would have laughed at you but this is now true. Ecrasez l'infame!
